clay piece (flat and compressed) usu. made from the earth of Karbala where Imam Hussain was martyred and burried (Hazara Shi'ites, as most other twelver Shi'ites place this piece of clay on the prayer mat or the floor before themselves sothat their forehead can touch it during the prostrations of the prayers)
